Course Description:

RATIONALE

The module provides an overview of historical, current and emerging perspectives in public health designed to equip students with a broad understanding of evolving practice. It considers local, national and global issues, with a particular focus on the role of social inequality on health inequalities, and on the practical assessment of population health needs. Throughout the module, students will be introduced to a variety of theoretical models and practical approaches, and provided with the opportunity to evaluate their use in a variety of contexts.

AIMS

1. To provide students with a critical understanding of the historical context and current trends in public health practice.

2. To introduce and critique key public health theories that engage with the determinants of health and health inequalities.

 

3. To engage with current public health initiatives at a local, national and global levels.

4. To explore the purpose and process of health needs assessments in planning and commissioning public health services that are appropriate to their setting.

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to: 17 1. Evaluate the concept of public health, and critically explore political and ethical issues relating to modern public health practice. 2. Understand and critically analyse the relationship between social inequality and health inequalities. 3. Discuss and critically appraise the role of local, national and international public health programmes, health directives and health initiatives. 4. Demonstrate a critical understanding, knowledge and ability to conduct a health needs assessment in supporting evidence-based public health practice.
